Departmental News- Medical Mission Trip
The nurse practitioner program at LCU sponsored a student medical mission trip to the central Appalachian mountains from May 31st – June 6th. Six students and 2 faculty traveled to Virginia to provide free primary care services, dental screening, and retinal exams while working on a mobile medical unit and in free-standing health clinics.

The students traveled to various areas in the Appalachian mountains serving low socioeconomic patients and learning about the rich culture of this part of the United States. Students participated in coal miner emergency medical training and learned about “black lung” and Silicosis lung disease. All of these experiences added to the growth of our nurse practitioner students and stimulated ideas about how to address the needs of the medically underserved in West Texas.

This successful trip was capped off with beautiful hikes in the mountains, great conversations around the campfire, and many wonderful reflections on our experiences. This is the first of several medical mission trips planned for the LCU nurse practitioner students.
