This spring, Jessica Armstrong had the opportunity to participate in Marshalltown, Iowa’s Citizen Academy. The academy is open to any citizens within the Marshalltown, Iowa area. Marshalltown is about an hour northwest of the capital Des Moines, Iowa. For ten weeks, citizens ranging in age from high school students to retirees learned the basics of the police force. They meet members of the Drug Task Force, K-9 Unit, District Attorney’s office, Crime Scene Investigators teams, and the SWAT and Negotiation teams. They also get to experience some hands on training. Participants conducted mock traffic stops, building searches, and field sobriety tests. Her favorite parts were trying on the SWAT gear, driving the police car through a course, and firing a hand pistol. Jessica gained a whole new respect for our law enforcement. The Citizen’s Academy was an experience she will never forget!
