Spotlight on...

Health! At LCU we are taking care of ourselves, our families, cars, and others.
On October 9th, the Medical Clinic put on the annual LCU Health Fair. Approximately 350 students, faculty & staff attended making it the largest one yet!

At the fair, attendees could have their blood pressure and hearing tested, get a flu shot, and have their BMI measurements done. They could also be tested to see if they matched with needed bone marrow and sign-up to donate at the fall Blood Drive on October 14th.

Forty-five vendors gave good information and a lot of giveaways at their booths and as door prizes. Some new vendors this year were Foot Tech, Lubbock CPR, Texas Ag Extension Agency, spiritual teams from Greenlawn and Broadway CC’s, Orange Theory Fitness, Healthy Meals To Go, Physical Therapy Today and TTUHSC Speech, Language and Hearing Science students doing hearing screenings.

The big giveaway from the Health Fair was a mountain bike and went to Ashley Johnson.

While the Health Fair was going on inside the Rec, out in the parking lot free car check-ups were taking place. Students got their fluids topped off and their lights and tires checked by professional mechanics.

When the blood drive took place a few days later the LCU community came out and made a big difference! This was sent from United Blood Services to the Medical Clinic about Blood Drive, "There were a total of 36 people that signed in, of those 30 donors gave 36 pints of life-saving blood. The goal for this blood drive was set at 36 and it was met – great job!!!  We appreciate everything that you and the University does! We look forward to working with you again in the near future."

With each of those 36 pints of blood up to three lives can be saved. That means that up to 108 lives can be changed because of the giving, caring people here at LCU!

The Healthy Family Conference was held on October 30th and was a great success!

FirstCapital Bank of Texas joined the Institute for Strong Families in sponsoring this year's Healthy Families Conference and benefit dinner. Living Purposely in Culture was the theme of the 2014 Healthy Families Conference. It is our goal to focus attentions on how our clients and families are impacted by the world around them, as well as how they can deliberately engage this current culture in healthy ways.

Registration and attendance more than doubled for this year’s conference. We thank everyone who helped by promoting or attending this conference.

The main guest speaker for the conference was Sylvia Hart Frejd, D.Min. who spoke on the digital invasion on our society and families. She spoke in chapel and then presented to a full house in the Baker. Those who have attended have told us that they enjoyed hearing our keynote speaker and that they were convicted to created technology free zones in their home. We have also heard that by exploring topics related to popular culture, we created a conference that spoke to many of the issues that are prevalent in their personal lives and the lives of those they serve.

Many others presented throughout the day including some of our LCU professors.

With funds raised by the benefit dinner, the Institute for Strong Families will continue providing free CEU opportunities to professionals in the South Plains community, help support the South Plains Children’s Memorial Garden located on LCU’s campus, and help behavioral sciences meet growing needs within its department.
